Dar-Al-Salam

Childhood Memory
In this project, the bird becomes a vivid emblem of my childhood spirit, capturing the sense of freedom and curiosity that once led me to leap from gravestone to gravestone within the Dar al-Salam cemetery. Each stone, etched with symbols and pictograms, became a canvas for my imagination—a gateway to stories, characters, and worlds beyond. The bird in this work embodies that playful journey, bringing life to the gravestones as it dances across their surfaces, awakening the symbols to tell a tale.
Through Video Projection Mapping, I animate these stones to recapture that childlike wonder, blending the boundary between memory and present. In a space often viewed as one of silence and finality, this project breathes movement into stillness, transforming gravestones into storytellers that bridge past and present, inviting viewers to rediscover the life and creativity that endure within spaces of remembrance.

Challenge

The main challenge lay in translating the sacred stillness of a cemetery into a respectful yet dynamic art form. Technically, synchronizing multiple projections with limited access to mapping software such as MadMapper required creative improvisation. Conceptually, the project needed to balance reverence for history with the innovation of digital storytelling. By integrating low-cost tools, custom calibration methods, and ambient soundscapes, the artist overcame these barriers—turning constraint into an aesthetic advantage. The result is an immersive work that honors memory while engaging contemporary audiences through sensory storytelling.
