Fragmented Conversation:
In this installation, two participants communicate only through real-time, fragmented text on a screen. With headphones blocking all sound, they cannot hear each other at all. Instead, as one person speaks, their words turn into slightly distorted text for the other person to read. The project shows how miscommunication can happen on the spot, especially for non-native speakers who might miss parts of a conversation or receive it in fragments. This piece is part of a series that brings the invisible struggles of communication to light by focusing on the emotional and often unseen challenges of understanding.
Challenge
The main challenge in this project was using affordable technology to create a seamless real-time experience. Effective noise cancellation is costly and difficult to achieve with budget-friendly headphones. In addition, widely used speech recognition systems like Google introduce a short delay of a second or two, which can momentarily confuse participants. I am refining these elements to make future interactions feel smoother and more intuitive.
